How AAC Presidential Candidate Omoyele Sowore was Charged for Insulting Buhari

Amnesty International says Buhari wants to deprive Sowore his rights

The department of State Services has charged pro-democracy activist and Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the last general elections Omoyele Sowore, to court for TREASONABLE FELONY and CYBER-STALKING President Muhammadu Buhari

Omoyele Sowore was arrested on August 3, 2019 in Lagos for planning a series of protests against the Government. The charges were signed on behalf of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), by Aminu Alilu, a Chief State Counsel in the Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, the Federal Ministry of Justice.

FG on Friday filed seven counts of treasonable felony and money laundering against the Convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Mr Omoyele Sowore.

He was charged along with Olawale Bakare, also known as Mandate. The charges were filed a day before the expiration of the detention order of the Federal High Court in Abuja permitting the Department of State Service to keep the activist for 45 days.

The court's detention order elapses on September 21.

The prosecution accused Sowore and his co-defendant of committing conspiracy to commit treasonable felony in breach of section 516 of the Criminal Code Act by allegedly staging “a revolution campaign on September 5, 2019 aimed at removing the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

They were also accused of committing the actual offence of reasonable felony in breach of section, 4(1)(c) of the Criminal Code Act, by using the platform of Coalition for Revolution, in August 2019 in Abuja, Lagos and other parts of Nigeria, to stage the #RevolutionNow protest allegedly aimed at removing the President.

The Prosecution also accused Sowore of cybercrime offences in violation of section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention) Act, by “knowingly” sending “messages by means of press interview granted on Arise Television network which you knew to be false for the purpose of causing insult, enmity, hatred and ill-will on the person of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

It also accused Sowore of money laundering offences in breach of section 15(1) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 by allegedly transferring by means of swift wire the sums of $19,975 on April 2, 2019; $20,475 on May 21, 2019, $16,975 on June 27, 2019, and another $16,975 on July 16, 2019.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International has in a tweet condemned the bizarre charges pressed against Sowore and called it an attempt by the Nigerian authorities to deprive him of his human rights.

@AmnestyNigeria : Amnesty International condemns the bizarre charges pressed on activist Omoyele Sowore  @YeleSowore for expressing his views in media interviews. The trumped up charges he is facing show an attempt by the Nigerian authorities to deprive him of his human rights;

Also, Nigerians have troop out on the cyber space of social medias as condemned  President Buhari  as elected dictator worse than any military dictator in the history of Nigeria.

@Omojuwa wrote: If citizens are now being charged for insulting the president, what’s left of Nigeria’s democracy? Free Sowore already. This is beyond embarrassing. I don’t even remember any previous Nigerian dictator who charged any citizen for insulting him. Not even Buhari as a military ruler

@adekunleGOLD: I really don't want to believe those fictional charges against Sowore. Treasonable what? A fucking Joke.

@EmperorTrilion: 1984,Buhari put Fela in custody, for Money Laundering, because Fela had dollars with him,on his way to a show abroad. 2019, Sowore charged with Same Money Laundering,for funding the Media House he runs in Nigeria:
@SaharaReporters by Buhari Buhari is consistent at foolishness!

@iefamharris : Sowore has been charged for insulting the president. I honestly don't want to believe we are this jobless. Trump called baba a lifeless president to his face remember?

@nicholasibekwe: One of the charges against Sowore was that he insulted the president. A ruling party of "progressives" is mad that the President was insulted.
No wonder
@DoubleEph Calls him spiritual leader.

@renoomokri : The government of General @MBuhari grants amnesty to bandits who have killed thousands of Nigerians and releases 'repentant' Boko Haram members and even says they can run for
@NGRPresident. This is the same government now charging Sowore for INSULTING Buhari!
