The United Nations (UN) has called for an immediate and quick action to secure the release of students and teachers abducted by armed groups in Nigeria, stressing that schools must be protected as safe environments for learning and development.
The appeal was made in Abuja by Mr. Malick Fall, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, during a meeting with a delegation from the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre led by its Commandant, Dr. Samuel Umanah.
The discussions centered on recent incidents of school abductions, as well as ongoing efforts to support affected families, schools, and communities in Oyo and Borno states.
Fall expressed concern over the ongoing captivity of the victims and strongly condemned the violence, noting that two teachers had already been killed during the incidents.
He further said the attacks highlight the growing risks facing children, teachers, and educational settings across the country.
According to him, protecting children’s right to access education in a secure and dignified setting must remain a national priority.
He urged authorities to fully implement the Minimum Standards for Safe Schools, strengthen emergency response systems, and adopt data-driven strategies to improve school security.
“We are deeply saddened that these school children and their teachers are still being held by armed groups.
“Schools must remain safe havens for learning and not places of fear. Children should never be a target. These incidents underscore the urgent need to strengthen the protection of children, educators and learning spaces”, Fall said.
While acknowledging the efforts of government authorities and security agencies, the UN official urged stronger and more coordinated action to secure the safe and swift release of all abducted students and teachers.
He also urged authorities to ensure that the perpetrators of the attacks are brought to justice and to reinforce measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party in Nigeria, Senator Nenadi Usman, has expressed deep sorrow and alarm over the abduction of more than 300 pupils of St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School, Papiri, in Agwarra Local Government Area of Niger State.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Senator Usman described the incident as a tragic reflection of Nigeria’s deteriorating security environment, noting that such a large-scale abduction “without early detection” underscores the gravity of the nation’s security challenges.
Nenadi warned that the Nigerian state “cannot continue to watch helplessly while its citizens are attacked with reckless abandon,” stressing that the country is “drifting dangerously towards the precipice of state failure.”
LP Chair pinned that the recent escalation of violence nationwide—particularly the shutdown of schools due to safety concerns—should alarm all Nigerians.
Senator Usman urged the government to take urgent and decisive steps to reverse what she termed the country’s “dangerous descent into anarchy.”
She highlighted the need to tackle widespread hunger and economic hardship, which she said are driving insecurity. “In any society where poverty has reached catastrophic levels, insecurity becomes an inevitable consequence,” she noted.

The human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC Omoyele Sowore has said the American International School, Abuja, where the EFCC wanted former Kogi state governor Yahaya Bello and his former Chief of Staff, Ali Bello, laundered close to $ 1 million in the name of paying “future school fees” of their wards should be charged and prosecuted for money laundering instead of being allowed to refund the money.
In his words on x , formerly known as Twitter:
The American International School @AISAbuja, where fugitive former Kogi state governor Yahaya Bello @OfficialGYBKogi and his former Chief of Staff, Ali Bello, laundered close to $ 1 million in the name of paying “future school fees” of their wards should be charged and prosecuted for money laundering instead of being allowed to refund the money;
this is the way the American justice system treats such cases on US soil, the @officialEFCC must also ensure the school discloses all such school fees paid by Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs),
I am sure there are a lot of discoveries that would be uncovered such that the school could be converted to a public school instead of its criminal connivance with financial criminals fleecing the Nigerian public across board, these must necessary apply to these ultra-expensive private schools in Nigeria. #RevolutionNow

NEWS RELEASE: Governor Adeleke Issues Red Alert on School and Rural Security, Announces Major Reforms

•Summons State Security Council Meeting
● Amotekun Billed for Reorganisation
Governor Ademola Adeleke has raised alarm over threat to peace and security within the state school system and rural farm communities, summoning a meeting of the state security council and announcing major security reforms.
In a statement issued on Tuesday morning, the Governor made reference to intelligence snippets of deliberate mobilisation of criminal elements to the rural areas of the state, stressing that such reports are alarming and pose serious concerns to the well being of Osun people.
The Governor noted that the administration is worried about reports that those behind the plot are targeting disruption of farming activities through kidnappings and attacks on rural farm settlements.
It was further revealed that schools are being targeted with abductions and attacks as a way of distracting from the implementation of the safe school initiative and the multi-billion naira infrastructure plan.
Governor Adeleke noted that while a meeting of the state security council has been summoned, preliminary directives have been issued to school authorities to take precautions to enhance the safety of pupils and students.
The Ministry of Education and all education agencies have been ordered to review safety measures in Osun schools in line with the safe school initiative.
In specific terms, school principals and heads are expected to clear overgrown school environments and ensure close liaison with the Parents and Teachers Association to secure their school environments.
The Governor further directs the Food Security Committee to submit an interim report to allow for immediate actions to safeguard farm security and secure farmers as the rainy season knocks on the door.
According to the Governor, we expect the initial report to contain practical and implementable measures to safeguard our farming communities through closer integration and mobilisation of the local hunters and forest rangers.
The Governor further announced his plans to embark on major reforms of the Amotekun security force, frowning at the internal rivalry, opposition penetration and external intervention that are negatively affecting the operation of the Amotekun force.
The Amotekun , the Governor noted, is to be reorganized to make it a truly efficient force to complement the efforts and operation of the police and other security agencies.
He assured the public that his administration has taken preemptive steps to secure our schools and farming communities, describing Osun as a peaceful state which will not succumb to attempts to destabilize the peace and harmony among our people.
“I have summoned a meeting of the State Security Council to firm up all plans. I assure our people that I am on top of the situation. We are committed to securing our schools, our farm and our society."
“No stone will be left unturned to disrupt plans of enemies of progress to plunge the state into crisis. I urge members of the public to inform security agencies of any unusual movement or activities across the state”, Governor Adeleke was quoted as saying.

The Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke has commended Dr. Owolabi Gbenga Ayodele for complimenting the state's government efforts to rejig the infrastructure of public schools and enhance learning environment, saying that the generous donation of school chairs and tables at Asipa Community High School in Asipa will benefit the students greatly.
Governor Adeleke who praised Dr. Owolabi for showing interest in improving the condition of learning for students, said the investment is in line with his administration's govt-alumni partnership board initiative purposely put up to upscale the infrastructures of public schools in the state.
The Governor maintained that education is the foundation and the future of any society and so, should not to be left for the government alone to shoulder its burden, noting that Dr. Owolabi has been able to demonstrate that private individuals can indeed make a significant difference in ensuring a brighter future for our children and the state through investment in their school's facilities.
"I'm indeed impressed by the gesture of Dr. Owolabi Gbenga Ayodele to provide 100 school chairs and tables to Asipa Community High School, Asipa, and want to sincerely appreciate him for complimenting our government's effort to improve the learning environment of our students," the Governor noted.
Governor Adeleke added that the donation of 1000 note books to Asipa Community High School students and other secondary schools in Origbo, Ife North Local Government will have a lasting impact on the lives of beneficiaries just as his upcoming scholarship award for public students in that local government will open the gateway to a promising future for the eventual beneficiaries.
"When I hosted the Ilesa Grammar School Old Students Association some days ago, I unveiled the govt-alumni partnership board, which I said would tap into private individuals for necessary support to improve the situation of our schools," the Governor pointed out.
"I must express my admiration for the wonderful intervention of Dr. Owolabi in Asipa Community High School as it not showed his compassion and commitment but also deep desire to ensure that students in public schools can succeed without any form of hindrance.
"He has challenged other well-to-do in our society to partner with the government in addressing the critical challenges in our public schools, which includes investing in infrastructure upgrade and provision of essential facilities that will promote qualitative learning. Like Dr. Owolabi, you can start with your alma mater and let's make a difference that will leave a lasting impact on students.
"On behalf of the good people of Osun State, I appreciate Dr. Owolabi for his support for education in Osun state and look forward to him for more impactful intervention for his community and Osun people as a whole."

I AM WATER — A Poem by Dele Abiola
I AM WATER
I am water
I'm the delight
Of all kids
To Play with
In all ages
I am water
I am friendly
Quench your thirst
I satisfied wholly
Seasons and times
I am water
Take your bath
Cook your food
At your services
I am useful
I am water
Truly really gentle
Friend to all
I fight none
I've goodly currents
I am water
Stretch out arms
Swim for pleasure
And good health
Swim for medals
I am water
The God's Spirit
Hovers over me
I am live
From the ancient
I'm raining water
Rinsing the earth
For bountiful harvest
I sustained all
Plants and animals
I am water
Abode to endless
Species of creatures
Celebrating in deeps
Operating in colonies
I am water
Easy going always
Never loose guard
Dare me at
Your own perils
I'm 'flowing water
I am resilient
I am persistent
Never give up
Breaking the rocks
I am water
I'm not destructive
Obstacles and refuses
On my route
Are the evils
I am water
of great rivers
Arere and araba
Of rambling trees
Can't withstand me
I am water
In every fight
Destructive fury fire
Overwhelmed by shame
Bows before me
I am water
I spare none
In my path
For I'm water
With forceful currents
I'm deep water
Speaking to deeps
Let the deeps
Drink from roaring
