Labour Party Crises Laid to Rest As Federal High Court Removes Julius Abure, Affirms Nenadi Esther Usman Leadership

Labour Party Crises Laid to Rest As Federal High Court Removes Julius Abure, Affirms Nenadi Esther Usman Leadership

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday laid to a total rest as the court removed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to recognise the Senator Esther Nenadi Usman–led executive of the party.

Justice Justice Peter Lifu delivering his ruling on Wednesday, relied on the April 4, 2025, decision of the Supreme Court to affirm Nenadi, a former Minister of Finance, as the legitimate leader of the labour party in Nigeria.

In his Judgement, Peter Lifu ordered the Nigeria's Electoral umpire Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to henceforth and immediately recognise the Nenadi-led Caretaker Committee as “the only valid authority to represent the Labour Party,” pending the conduct of a national convention.

The ruling followed a suit marked THC/ABJ/CS/2262/2025, filed by Nenadi. Julius Abure and the Nigerian Labour Congress were listed as defendants.

Justice Lifu held that evidence before the court showed that Abure’s tenure as national chairman had expired.

The judgement dismissed Abure’s argument that the matter was an internal party affair and therefore non-justiciable, ruling instead that the establishment of the caretaker committee was “a necessity” arising from the Supreme Court’s decision.

The judge recalled that the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee had earlier removed Abure following a leadership crisis within the party. A 29-member caretaker committee was subsequently constituted, with Nenadi appointed as chairperson.

That decision followed an expanded stakeholders’ meeting held in Umuahia, Abia State, and hosted by Governor Alex Otti. The meeting was chaired by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, a former ally of Abure.

Abure, dissatisfied with his removal, had approached the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking validation of his position as national chairman. In an affidavit supporting suit FHC/ABJ/CS/1271/2024, he claimed he was lawfully elected Acting National Chairman at a NEC meeting in Benin City on March 29, 2021, following the death of the party’s substantive chairman.

He further told the court that at a NEC meeting held in Asaba on April 18, 2023, and monitored by INEC, the party renewed the tenures of state chairmen, expelled members accused of anti-party activities, and filled resulting vacancies.

Abure also said the party held its national convention on March 27, 2024, in Nnewi, Anambra State, where he was elected National Chairman, adding that the party under his leadership produced candidates for the Edo and Ondo governorship elections.

Although both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal initially ruled in Abure’s favour and ordered INEC to recognise him, the Supreme Court later overturned those decisions.

In a lead judgment prepared by Justice Inyang Okoro, the apex court allowed the appeal filed by Nenadi and the committee’s secretary, Hon. Darlington Nwokocha, while dismissing Abure’s cross-appeal.

The Supreme Court also urged political parties to adhere strictly to their constitutions in appointing officers and advised officials whose tenures had expired to vacate office accordingly.

Disregard Noises Of Opposition, Gov Otti Urges Abians, Says They Are Gathering For Themselves Not For Abians

Disregard Noises Of Opposition, Gov Otti Urges Abians, Says They Are Gathering For Themselves Not For Abians

Abia State Governor and National Leader of the Labour Party, Dr Alex Otti, OFR, has urged Abians to disregard the recent tantrums and gatherings of members of the opposition parties who had the opportunity to develop the State in the past but failed to do so, stating that they are gathering for their selfish interests and not for the good of the people.

Governor Otti stated this at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church Umuoriehi, the Headquarters of the Abia North Conference of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Umuahia North LGA, during the dedication of the Church building recently reconstructed by the Governor, with his personal fund.

Otti who is the National Leader of the Labour Party in Nigeria described the gatherings of the opposition politicians in the State against him as a failed project, saying that, it is only the empty barrel that makes noise.

"Pastor Uguru made reference to the noise that you may have been hearing in the last few days.

"I want us to just dismiss it as noise, you know, and it's always the empty barrel that makes the loudest noise.

"As for gathering, as recorded in Isaiah chapter 54, verse 15, it says, Behold, they will surely gather, but the gathering is not of me. And since it's not of me, what would they do? They will scatter and they will fall for your sake. That's the holy book.

"And like I've always also said, some of these people speaking have forgotten what is written in Lamentations chapter 5, verse 37. And it's a big charge. Who are you to speak when the Lord has not spoken?

"So, nobody should worry about that. We don't even think we should dignify them with responses", Gov. Otti stated.

Governor Otti said his government would continue to do its works of changing the narratives in the State, which is more important as these politicians are not interested in the people of the State.

"We should just do what we are doing. In everything, they will not talk about you, the Abia people. They are talking about themselves.

"But they are a tiny minority. And God doesn't make mistakes. And he doesn't have an unfinished project. So, I don't want anybody to lose breath or worry about it", Gov. Otti urged the congregants.

The State Chief Executive, who clarified that he did not do all the works in the Church building but renovated an already standing building, explained that he did not do the renovation project with government 's funds.

"It's not correct to say that I did everything. I did a little part of it. The Church was standing before now.

"So, what we did was a little renovation because we wanted it to look better.

"It's also important for me to re-emphasise and I'm sure those who know me, know that government money did not come in here.

"We only use government money for government business. But, because we also have a second address, we're able to do the things we were doing before now. Those of you who have been here long enough will remember that sometime about 2012, that I came here and led the fundraising for the construction of the conference office there", Gov. Otti stated.

The Governor used the opportunity to announce that the activities leading to the commemoration of this year's Armed Forces Remembrance Day have commenced and would be concluded on 15th January, being the the Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

Earlier in his sermon, the President, Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Abia North - Central Conference, Pastor Kennedy Ihuoma challenged the congregants to be faithful to God in all they do.

Pastor Ihuoma , who titled his sermon "Can I be a Joseph to Interpret the King's Dream", charged believers, especially those in government to be the Joseph of their time, who would be able to interpret the dreams and visions of their leaders, including Governor Alex Otti.

He narrated how the Governor worshiped in the Church and made a promise to reconstruct the Church building, from his personal funds, and was full of joy over the quality of work done in the Church building.

Pastor Ihuoma thanked the Governor on behalf of the Church leadership and members and prayed God to continue to bless him.

The Church dedication, which attracted many dignitaries including the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, members of the State House of Assembly, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, acting SSG, Dr Emmanuel Mereibeole, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Ph.D, among others, featured the cutting of dedication ribbon and prayers offered for the Governor and his cabinet.

*The NWC also considered* other recent political developments, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) press release of 7th January 2026, which reaffirmed the Supreme Court judgment of 4th April 2025 that sacked Mr. Julius Abure as National Chairman of the Labour Party.

3.0 *Resolutions*

Following exhaustive deliberations, the National Working Committee resolved as follows:

1. The National leadership of the Labour Party wishes His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi well in his future political endeavours and in his new political party.

2. The NWC reaffirmed that the Labour Party remains united, indivisible, indissoluble and steadfast in its mission to build a Nigeria founded on equal opportunity, social justice, and good governance. Accordingly, as the Party continues to monitor political developments across the country, the Labour Party remains a strong and viable political force and shall continue to operate as an independent, ideologically driven political organisation.

3. The NWC, in a unanimous decision, affirmed its recognition of His Excellency, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, as the National Leader of the Labour Party.

4. The NWC received the INEC press release of 7th January 2026 with relief and a sense of institutional clarity, noting that the release merely reaffirms the Supreme Court judgment of 4th April 2025, which held that the tenure of Mr. Julius Abure as National Chairman of the Labour Party had elapsed.

- The National Leadership of the Labour Party therefore urges INEC, in line with its press release and subsisting court judgments, to accord Senator Nenadi Usman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha all rights, recognition, and privileges attached to the office of National Chairman and National Secretary of the Labour Party, in strict compliance with the rule of law and the Supreme Court judgment referenced by INEC.

5. The NWC expressed deep appreciation to Party members and Nigerians for their continued interest in, and confidence reposed in, the Labour Party. The Party urges Nigerians to continue to participate in the ongoing membership revalidation and registration exercise to enable the Party achieve its target of a 10-million-strong membership base nationwide.

6. The NWC reaffirmed that all congresses and the National Convention of the Party shall hold accordingly, in strict compliance with the provisions of the Party Constitution. Members at all levels are therefore encouraged to actively participate in the congress processes. The Labour Party leadership remains committed to ensuring credible, transparent, and inclusive congresses.

7. The NWC noted the recent expressions of interest by certain individuals to contest elective positions under the platform of the Labour Party. The party observed that this growing interest reflects the increasing confidence Nigerians have in the Party.

HOLD ON TO YOUR FOLD: PRESUMED C'OALITION IS NOT A MERGER — SOUTHWEST LP LEADERS

The leadership of the Labour Party in the SouthWest of Nigeria in an emergency meeting held on January 1st of this year, after keenly and carefully reviewing the most recent happening in the party concluded that though the leadership might be aware of the political talks in-between her former presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi, and wishes him success in his political aspirations,, that does not predetermined the fact that the Labour Party as a political party had an agreement with any political party to an extent of throwing away the party's identity and ideology to the waste bin. The region believes a political coalition is when parties coalesce and synergies to amass political gains at each others' interests and not at the detriment of  one coalition partner's interest,  as such should be led by party leadership not individual for personal interest or gains.

Here is the communique released at the end of the meeting: Labour Party South West Leadership Official Communiqué (Jan 1, 2026)

'"On Thursday, January 1, 2026, the Labour Party leadership in the South West convened an emergency strategic meeting to address the party’s deepening internal crisis especially in light of Peter Obi’s defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), along with other senior party officials.

The meeting resolved the following key points:

1. Information Flow from National Office: We demand immediate, transparent communication from the national leadership. The South West must never be left guessing where our leaders stand on national political issues. No more silence before decisions are made.

2. Nenadi Usman’s Stance & Interim Committees: the Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party fully endorses Obi’s move to the African Democratic Congress ADC. That it was pre-approved and strategic, not a betrayal. However, we insist on clarifying how this affects state-level interim committees. Also, Inaugurate the Interim State Working Committee ISWC NOW. No further delays. Restart membership validation drives across all states.

3. Rebuilding Party Structures: the crisis exposed weak ward, LGA, and state structures. The going forward is to stabilize first, then build. Coordinate logistics/materials for grassroots reactivation.

4. Alliances & Ideological Integrity: We support strategic coalitions with other parties but never at the cost of the Labour Party’s identity, foundation, or ideology. Any alliance must serve Nigerians, not just ambition.

5. Defining Leadership Direction: The National office must issue clear, binding directives to regional/state leaders on post-Obi exit. There has to be no more confusion. However,  one voice. One plan. Especially ahead of the Jan 19 court judgment.

6. Impending Court Judgment (Jan 19): This date is critical, and the outcome will determine the legitimacy of Usman vs Abure leadership. Also, determine the legal standing of Obi’s ADC move and the future of LP’s national structure.

7. Guarding the Party: the diehard members must protect LP from opportunists and political merchants exploiting the chaos. Ŵe have to stay vigilant, and steadfast.

8. United South West Front: the South West leaders must speak with ONE voice united, unequivocal, and formidable. We have to present a clear, collective position on all political complexities.

9. Membership Drive & Revalidation: the earlier the better we immediately launch, coordinate, and start registration/revalidation. We suggest we go digital cum physical channels. And mainly we target youth, women at home, and in the diaspora.

10. Logistics & Materials Chart: There is a strong need to draft a state-by-state plan for the registration kits, banners, and flyers. While doing this we have to consider mobilizer transport, data capture technology, and security. Moreover, the timeline is significant probably 2 weeks to rollout, 4 weeks to complete the exercise.

Expectations:

The South West leadership’s resolve is crystal clear: we stand firmly behind Senator Nenadi Esther Usman’s Labour Party however that loyalty hinges on bridging the communication chasm and getting real-time, actionable direction from the national office. We’re not just pledging support; we’re demanding clarity, responsiveness, and accountability especially on the 10 critical points raised in our Jan 1 meeting. Until the national leadership treats us as partners not spectators our solidarity remains conditional. Let’s turn talk; into action: respond, implement, and rebuild together."

PRESS RELEASE: LABOUR PARTY WELCOMES PETER OBI’S DEFECTION TO THE ADC

PRESS RELEASE: LABOUR PARTY WELCOMES PETER OBI’S DEFECTION TO THE ADC

As the nation may recall, on 26th May 2025, the Labour Party issued a statement confirming that the participation of His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, in the ADC coalition received the full blessings of the party. Subsequently, following the official unveiling of the ADC in July 2025, the Labour Party issued a follow-up statement on 3rd July 2025, reiterating its earlier position and support for Mr. Obi’s political engagement with the ADC.

Following Mr. Peter Obi’s eventual formalization of his entry into the ADC today, the Labour Party wishes to inform its teeming members across the federation that the party has not withdrawn the initial support extended to its 2023 presidential candidate. While the leadership of the Labour Party continues its determined struggle to reclaim the party from the stranglehold of entrenched interests bent on foisting a one-party system on our body politic, we wish to reassure members nationwide that there is no cause for alarm.

Following Mr. Obi’s anticipated exit, all statutory organs of the Labour Party will convene to chart a fresh and sustainable course for the party. We are confident that the fortunes of the party will be revitalised in no time. Even as the party works assiduously to fill the void created by the recent wave of defections, we reassure our members that the Labour Party will return stronger, better organised, and more focused. The ongoing membership revalidation and registration exercise is designed to inject new energy into the party, and we are pleased to note that the exercise is already yielding positive results.

We further assure the Nigerian people that the Labour Party, under the able and visionary leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, will continue to do what is right and offer Nigerians a credible and people-centred alternative to the APC’s rudderless government in 2027. We remain confident that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

As we wish all lovers of democracy a prosperous New Year, the Labour Party appeals to Nigerians to continue to sustain their faith in democracy, even in the face of the despair and hopelessness being imposed on them by the groping APC government. With collective resolve and renewed determination, it shall indeed be better come 2027.

Labour Party BOT: Unilateral actions of Seyi Showunmi in the Southwest must be Checked - Ogun State LP Chairman

Apagun Olaolu Samuel

Ogun State interim Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) Apagun Olaolu Samuel has called on the Labour Party Board Of Trustees to checkmate the unilateral activities of the Honourable representing Ojo Federal Constituency of LAGOS STATE Seyi Sowunmi in the South West.

According to the letter addressed to the Secretary of the BOT and made available to the media , with the exception of Ogun State which has been an integral part of NWC if the party from the beginning, Seyi Sowunmi has been unilaterally nominating members of the interim national working committee for the Southwest without proper consultation.

It's noteworthy to add that in another petition to the Nenadi Usman Led National Working Committee of the party by the Oyo State Stakeholders of the LP,  Sowunmi has also been accused of trying to supplanted the authentic Labour Party structures in some states  to set up his own State Working Committee for  the Labour Party.

With individuals of questionable intents like Seyi Sowunmi, the party may only be moving from one crises to the other.

*Petition Against Hon. Seyi Showunmi’s Unilateral Actions in the Southwest Region*

Dear Sir,

I am writing to formally express my concerns regarding the unilateral political activities of Hon. Seyi Showunmi within the Southwest region. It has come to my attention that he has been nominating members of the interim national working committee for the Southwest without proper consultation, with the exception of Ogun State, which has been an integral part of our party from the beginning.

Furthermore, it is alarming that he is also presenting nominations for the state working committees without engaging with key stakeholders and local party members. He claims to represent the Southwest leadership of the Labour Party, yet his actions suggest a self-serving agenda which undermines our democratic principles.

His antecedents in Lagos are also a clear example of his undemocratic tendencies.

If these actions continue unchecked, we risk creating a similar situation to that of Abayomi Arabambi, wherein one individual manipulates the party framework to benefit personal interests rather than those of all party members throughout the region. It is crucial to note that Hon. Showunmi’s jurisdiction is limited primarily to his role as a House of Representatives member in the OJO Constituency in Lagos. His attempts to exert influence across the Southwest should be scrutinized before he succeeds in destabilizing the Party.

We urge the national body to take immediate action to address these issues and ensure a fair and representative process for all nominations within the Labour Party in the Southwest. It is essential that we uphold the core values of democracy, inclusivity, and collaboration that our party represents.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your prompt response.

BREAKING: Labour Party BOT Dissolve Nenadi Usman Led interim National Working Committee (iNWC)

The Labour Party (LP) Board of Trustees BOT has dissolved the Senator Nenadi Usman Led National Working Committee of the party.

In a letter that surface on the internet, signed by COMRADE S.O.Z. EJIO and  COMRADE SALISU MOHAMMED as the Chairman and Secretary of the party's BOT respectively, notify the interim leadership of the expiration and dissolution of the of the body

The letter Titled EXPIRATION OF LABOUR PARTY INTERIM NATIONAL WORKING COMMITTEE (iNWC) reads in part.

The statutory NEC of the party will meet in due course to constitute a new National Working Committee in accordance with the party's constitution and the Electoral Act 2022.

This action is taken to save the Labour Party from further derailment, nationwide desertion and the destruction of Nigeria workers' last hope to rescue our country to the path of progress through true democratic governance.

You will recall that a three months (90 days) time frame was given to your committee on September 4,  2024 at Umuahia, Abia state, to organize nationwide congresses and national convention to elect substantive  of our party nationwide, but failed to achieve the said objectives after over 400 days or well more than a year.

In spite of this failure, the statutory NEC meeting of the Labour Party, which held on July 18, 2025 at

Transcorp Hotel, Abuja, re-appointed you to lead the INWC of the party for another period of 90 days to accomplish the same task. This time frame elapsed again on October 17, 2025 without achieving our party's ultimate goal of fruitful participation in all elections of the country during the period and the forthcoming 2027 general elections of Nigeria, the overwhelming incompetence of the dissolved NWC resulting in party members' plunging loss of faith and unabated desertion of our party nationwide to other political parties.

Subsequent to the above, you are hereby requested to halt every activity in the name of the Labour Party and handover all documents of the party in your possession to the secretary of the Board of Trustees (BOT).

While thanking you for your contributions in the past, we wish you well in your future endeavours and remain with best regards.

Hopefully, this will be a way forward and not another step towards more distablisation of the party .
