Exit of Supreme Leader: The 3 Iranian Elders in Charge of Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran

Authorities in Tehran have announced a three-member interim leadership council to run the government after the killing of Islamic Republic's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Israeli-United States strikes.

Tehran pledged to avenge the killing on Saturday of Khamenei, who had been in power for nearly four decades. 

Iran's IRGC has since targeted Israeli and US assets located across Gulf countries with Ballistic missiles in retaliatory strikes.

While United States President Donald Trump has said he wants a change in Iran’s government, the religious leaders of Iran moved on Sunday to start the process of choosing Khamenei’s successor. So the change of leadership in Tehran will not in anyway change the governance principles of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Trump on Sunday said he is ready to speak with the new Iranian leaders.

What is the interim leadership council?

Article 111 of Iran’s Constitution authorises a temporary leadership council to assume the supreme leader’s duties until a successor is elected.

That council will consist of President Masoud Pezeshkian; the chief justice of the Supreme Court, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei; and a member of the Guardian Council, Ayatollah Alireza Arafi.


So who are these three figures who will temporarily run Iran as it reels from war?


Ayatollah Alireza Arafi

Arafi has been a member of the Guardian Council since 2019. Its members are appointed by the supreme leader. It is an Islamic legal authority that vets Iran’s laws and policies to make sure they conform to Islamic principles. It approves election candidates, has veto power over legislation passed by parliament and supervises elections.

Arafi also serves as the deputy chairman of the Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for overseeing the selection of the supreme leader. He leads Friday prayers in Qom, Iran’s most important religious centre, and heads the seminary system, overseeing education for religious leaders nationwide.

Masoud Pezeshkian

Pezeshkian, 71, is a reformist politician and heart surgeon who served in the army during the Iran-Iraq War. He was elected president in the 2024 elections.

He previously served as health minister under President Mohammad Khatami and, after 2005, as a member of parliament representing the northwestern city of Tabriz.

Pezeshkian ran unsuccessfully for president earlier but in 2024 won on a reform-oriented platform and has since navigated economic pressures and regional tensions.

He earlier campaigned on economic stabilisation, easing social restrictions and pursuing constructive engagement abroad while affirming loyalty to the Islamic Republic’s constitutional framework.

Reacting to Khamenei’s assassination, Pezeshkian said in a statement that Iran now considers “it its legitimate duty and right to avenge the perpetrators and masterminds of this historic crime”.

Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei

Mohseni-Ejei is a senior religious leader and has headed the judiciary since Khamenei appointed him to the post in July 2021.

He previously served as intelligence minister from 2005 to 2009 and later as prosecutor-general and first deputy chief justice. He is regarded as a hardline figure aligned with the conservative wing of the government.

In January, when the collapsing rial triggered protests across Iran, Mohseni-Ejei promised “no leniency” towards what he called “rioters”.

Mohseni-Ejei said the US and Israel “openly and explicitly supported the unrest” in the country after Trump called on Iranians to take to the streets.

After Khamenei’s killing, Trump again addressed the Iranian public on Saturday, calling for them to topple the government. “This will probably be your only chance for generations,” he said on Saturday after the US and Israeli attacks on Iran began.

IRGC also announced that US THAAD radar in UAE have been destroyed. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announces precision strikes on THAAD radar site at Al-Ruwais.

IRGC also stated that they attacked a US naval fuel-support ship 700 km off Chabahar with drones and missiles.

Iran's IRGC on Saturday said the U.S. aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln was targeted by four cruise missiles. Following the strike, the carrier left its mission area and proceeded southeast toward the Indian Ocean.

Near Impossible to Reach Any Deal: US Military Prepares for Potential Weeks-Long Operations Against Iran

Iran and the United States will hold a second round of talks over Tehran's nuclear program next week, the Swiss Foreign Ministry said Saturday. Oman, which welcomed the first round of indirect talks on Feb. 6, will host the talks.

(Reuters) — Two U.S. officials told Reuters that the American military is preparing for the possibility of sustained operations against Iran if President Donald Trump orders an attack. Such operations could escalate into a far more dangerous conflict than either country has experienced before.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of planning, said the developments increase the risks to ongoing U.S.-Iran diplomatic efforts.

U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to meet with Iranian representatives in Geneva on Tuesday, with Oman acting as mediator. Earlier Saturday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that although Trump prefers a deal with Tehran, achieving one is “extremely difficult.”

U.S. officials confirmed Friday that the Pentagon will deploy an additional aircraft carrier to the Middle East, along with thousands of troops, fighter jets, missile destroyers, and other firepower capable of conducting and defending attacks.

In a speech at a North Carolina base Friday, Trump said: “It’s been difficult to reach an agreement” with Iran. He added: “Sometimes you have to feel fear. That’s the only thing that will really solve the problem.” Trump also suggested the possibility of regime change in Iran, stating: “That seems to be the best that can happen,” without naming potential leaders.

Trump has historically expressed skepticism about deploying ground troops, saying last year: “The last thing you want is to use ground forces.” Current U.S. deployments in the region indicate a focus on air and naval strikes, though special operations forces remain an option, as demonstrated by recent operations in Venezuela.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated: “President Trump is keeping all options on the table regarding Iran. He listens to various viewpoints but makes the final decision based on what is best for our country and national security.” The Pentagon declined to comment.

Officials noted that current planning is more complex than before. U.S. forces could target Iranian governmental and security facilities, not just nuclear infrastructure, though details were not disclosed. Experts warn that the risks to U.S. troops would be significant, given Iran’s extensive missile arsenal, and that Iranian retaliatory strikes could trigger a broader regional conflict. The U.S. anticipates Iranian responses, potentially resulting in prolonged exchanges of attacks.

Trump has repeatedly threatened strikes on Iran over its nuclear and missile programs and domestic repression. The Revolutionary Guard has warned that any attacks on Iranian soil could lead to retaliatory strikes on U.S. bases. The head of the UN nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, said on Friday that reaching an agreement with Iran on inspections of its processing facilities was possible but “terribly difficult.”


Iran and the United States, which have had no diplomatic relations since shortly after the 1979 revolution, held talks on the nuclear issue last week in Oman. No dates have been set for further negotiations.

The United States joined Israel’s 12-day war against Iran in June, carrying out strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Videos verified by AFP showed people in Iran chanting anti-government slogans this week as authorities marked the anniversary of the Islamic revolution. According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, 7,005 people, mostly protesters, were killed in the recent crackdown. The group added that more than 53,000 people were arrested, while rights organizations caution the toll may be higher.


The Norway-based Iran Human Rights NGO said “hundreds” of people face charges linked to the protests that could carry the death penalty.


It said one protester, Saleh Mohammadi, 18, was sentenced to death on charges of killing a policeman. Iran’s judiciary stated that no final and “enforceable” verdict has yet been issued in the case.

Three politicians associated with the reformist wing of Iranian politics supportive of President Masoud Pezeshkian — Azar Mansouri, Javad Emam, and Ebrahim Asgharzadeh — were detained this week and later released on bail Thursday and Friday, their lawyer Hojjat Kermani told the ISNA news agency.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday declared victory over the United Stated and Israel during the recent Iranian-Israeli war that started when Tel Aviv struck Iran’s nuclear and military sites and assassinated top military leaders and key scientists on 13 June.

‘EXAGGERATING ATTACKS’ BY TRUMP 

In a speech posted by the official IRNA news agency, Khamenei commented on the recent US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, asserting that, while these attacks require legal prosecution before international courts, they “failed to achieve anything important.”

He stated that the US joined the war only when they felt that Israel would be completely annihilated if the Americans did not interfere.

The US regime “entered the war to save it (Israel) but they could not make any achievement during this war,” Khamenei said.

The Iranian supreme leader accused US President Donald Trump of “exaggeration” regarding the American achievement in hitting the Iranian nuclear sites, asserting that Iran has given “a strong slap” to the US.

As Trump has called for “unconditional surrender” by Iran during the Israeli war, Khamenei said Iran “will never” surrender to the US.

“This person (Trump) has exposed this truth and demonstrated that America will not accept anything less than Iran's surrender,” Khamenei said.

“The Iranian people must realize that this is the essence of America's conflict with us, and that this great insult to the Iranian people is woven into the fabric of Americans' policies.”

Israel and Iran have committed to a ceasefire announced by Trump early on Tuesday less than two days after the US launched heavy strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites of Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan.

Counting the lost, Israeli authority confirmed that Iran’s ballistic missile strikes on Israel during 12 days of war killed 28 people, all but one of them civilians, and left more than 3,000 wounded.

According to the Israeli Health Ministry 3,238 people were hospitalized over the course of the attacks.

 Among them, 23 were seriously injured, 111 sustained moderate wounds, 2,933 were lightly hurt, and 138 were treated for acute anxiety. The condition of 30 others remained undetermined.

 Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Tehran launched approximately 550 ballistic missiles and around 1,000 drones at Israel. Not less than 31 ballistic missile impacts were recorded in populated areas or at critical infrastructure sites, including a power station in southern Israel, an oil refinery in Haifa, and a university in central Israel. 

Reports indicated that 31,000 buildings were damaged and 4,000 vehicles destroyed as a result of the war with Iran, according to Israel’s Channel 12.

Israel may never try attacking Iran again, not in any possible nearest time.

Also, the Israeli Minister of Finance officially announced that the cost of the operation against Iran is estimated at around $5.4 billion, and the damages caused by missile impacts are estimated at $1.35 billion!

This is just the officially announced figure by the Zionist regime, and it seems that the unofficial numbers are much higher than this!

As for the Iranian estimation of casualties and damages are expected to by humugu.  As for the cost of prosecuting their resistance defence against Israel, it should be far less to Israel's estimation.

Meanwhile, Iranian ministry of health reports 610 causalities, 4,746 wounded, 971 currently hospitalised while 687 underwent surgery.

Brent crude already jumped 10%, hovering at $77—and could climb past $100–150 if tensions spiral. 

But the final call lies with Iran’s top security council.

Chinese envoy at the UN Security Council strongly condemns the U.S. attacks on Iran and the bombing of nuclear facilities.

The U.S. actions are a serious violation of the UN Charter, international law, and Iran's sovereignty.  

International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that damage has been documented at Isfahan, Fordow, and Natanz following the U.S. strikes, but no increase in radiation has been detected outside the sites.

Meanwhile, Israel has begun a new wave of attacks in Iran, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Saturday, local time.

Iranian nuclear plants have been targeted in the latest wave of air raids by the Israeli Air Force in central Iran.
