HOLD ON TO YOUR FOLD: PRESUMED C'OALITION IS NOT A MERGER — SOUTHWEST LP LEADERS
The leadership of the Labour Party in the SouthWest of Nigeria in an emergency meeting held on January 1st of this year, after keenly and carefully reviewing the most recent happening in the party concluded that though the leadership might be aware of the political talks in-between her former presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi, and wishes him success in his political aspirations,, that does not predetermined the fact that the Labour Party as a political party had an agreement with any political party to an extent of throwing away the party's identity and ideology to the waste bin. The region believes a political coalition is when parties coalesce and synergies to amass political gains at each others' interests and not at the detriment of one coalition partner's interest, as such should be led by party leadership not individual for personal interest or gains.
Here is the communique released at the end of the meeting: Labour Party South West Leadership Official Communiqué (Jan 1, 2026)
'"On Thursday, January 1, 2026, the Labour Party leadership in the South West convened an emergency strategic meeting to address the party’s deepening internal crisis especially in light of Peter Obi’s defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), along with other senior party officials.
The meeting resolved the following key points:
1. Information Flow from National Office: We demand immediate, transparent communication from the national leadership. The South West must never be left guessing where our leaders stand on national political issues. No more silence before decisions are made.
2. Nenadi Usman’s Stance & Interim Committees: the Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party fully endorses Obi’s move to the African Democratic Congress ADC. That it was pre-approved and strategic, not a betrayal. However, we insist on clarifying how this affects state-level interim committees. Also, Inaugurate the Interim State Working Committee ISWC NOW. No further delays. Restart membership validation drives across all states.
3. Rebuilding Party Structures: the crisis exposed weak ward, LGA, and state structures. The going forward is to stabilize first, then build. Coordinate logistics/materials for grassroots reactivation.
4. Alliances & Ideological Integrity: We support strategic coalitions with other parties but never at the cost of the Labour Party’s identity, foundation, or ideology. Any alliance must serve Nigerians, not just ambition.
5. Defining Leadership Direction: The National office must issue clear, binding directives to regional/state leaders on post-Obi exit. There has to be no more confusion. However, one voice. One plan. Especially ahead of the Jan 19 court judgment.
6. Impending Court Judgment (Jan 19): This date is critical, and the outcome will determine the legitimacy of Usman vs Abure leadership. Also, determine the legal standing of Obi’s ADC move and the future of LP’s national structure.
7. Guarding the Party: the diehard members must protect LP from opportunists and political merchants exploiting the chaos. Ŵe have to stay vigilant, and steadfast.
8. United South West Front: the South West leaders must speak with ONE voice united, unequivocal, and formidable. We have to present a clear, collective position on all political complexities.
9. Membership Drive & Revalidation: the earlier the better we immediately launch, coordinate, and start registration/revalidation. We suggest we go digital cum physical channels. And mainly we target youth, women at home, and in the diaspora.
10. Logistics & Materials Chart: There is a strong need to draft a state-by-state plan for the registration kits, banners, and flyers. While doing this we have to consider mobilizer transport, data capture technology, and security. Moreover, the timeline is significant probably 2 weeks to rollout, 4 weeks to complete the exercise.
Expectations:
The South West leadership’s resolve is crystal clear: we stand firmly behind Senator Nenadi Esther Usman’s Labour Party however that loyalty hinges on bridging the communication chasm and getting real-time, actionable direction from the national office. We’re not just pledging support; we’re demanding clarity, responsiveness, and accountability especially on the 10 critical points raised in our Jan 1 meeting. Until the national leadership treats us as partners not spectators our solidarity remains conditional. Let’s turn talk; into action: respond, implement, and rebuild together."
