It'll Be Good If Peter Obi Takes Coalition Ticket, Obi And Atiku’s Deal Not Possible—Lawal

Babachir Lawal |
A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal has stated that the new opposition coalition is not focused on making Atiku Abubakar the presidential candidate, during an interview with news men.
The former SGF explained that the coalition is not built around one person, but around a collective effort to build a strong platform for the 2027 elections.
According to Lawal, it is wrong to think the group is pushing only Atiku and noted that other politicians with presidential ambitions are also part of the talks.
He mentioned Peter Obi, who was a presidential candidate in 2023, and Rotimi Amaechi, who ran in the APC primary and came second.
Lawal questioned why people think Peter Obi or Amaechi would support a plan that only benefits Atiku.
He said they are part of the meetings because they believed in building a fair and open political system.
He added that his own support in 2023 was for Peter Obi, and he has not changed sides.
Lawal also said not everyone in the coalition wants to be president.
Some are interested in running for the House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, or governor in their states.
They simply want a platform where they have a fair chance.
He explained that the coalition will hold a national convention.
There, they will choose leaders who will guide the selection of candidates.
The goal is to allow a democratic process to produce the presidential candidate, not handpick one.
He said Atiku is only one of the active members, and his efforts are seen more because he strongly believes in building a strong opposition.
On the rumours of a secret deal between Atiku and Peter Obi, Lawal said clearly, “It isn’t possible.”
"Why should it be about Atiku? I know some of the people that I suspect, have presidential ambition that are attending the meetings. Peter Obi is there as a presidential candidate himself, and I can’t see why he would join a coalition to build up a system that will benefit only Atiku. I suspect too that Amaechi has a presidential ambition.
It will be good for Peter Obi if he takes the ticket. For me, I am coming into this merger from the background of somebody who worked very, very hard in 2023 to make Peter Obi president.
We have heard speculation about Peter Obi and Atiku’s deal, it isn’t possible!" Lawal said.
