BOAT MISHAPE IN NIGER STATE: LP Chair Nenadi Calls For More Robust Legislations, Stricter Regulation For Inland Waterways

BOAT MISHAPE IN NIGER STATE: LP Chair Nenadi Calls For More Robust Legislations, Stricter Regulation For Inland Waterways

Sen. Nenadi Usman

The interim National Chairman of the Labour Party in Nigeria Senator Nenadi Usman has called on the relevant authorities to urgently consider more robust legislations and stricter regulation for inland waterways in the country .

According to the Usman, the recurrent boat mishaps in Nigeria, particularly in Niger State, where such tragedies have become very frequent  demand an immediate and decisive action.

The lastest incident occurred at the Malale riverfront in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The ill-fated boat, carrying about 90 passengers, departed Tugan Sule in Shagunu Ward, Borgu LGA, en route to Dugga for a condolence visit when the tragedy struck.

Initial reports put the death toll at about 29, but has now, regrettably, risen to nearly 60 lives lost.

"It is deeply unfortunate and heart-wrenching that people on a journey to sympathize with others became victims of a calamity themselves."

"This is one tragedy too many, and the frequency with which we record such mishaps on our inland waterways should be a matter of grave concern to all Nigerians."

"On behalf of the entire Labour Party family, I extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the government and people of Niger State, and indeed all Nigerians, on this national tragedy." Nenadi concluded.

Herbert Wigwe's death: I'm deeply Shaken – Saraki

A former president of the Nigeria Senate Dr Bukola Saraki has expressed his sadness over the unfortunate helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Herbert Wigwe, his wife and son in California, United States.

Saraki wrote:

I'm deeply shaken by the news of the helicopter crash in California that claimed the lives of my friend and brother, Herbert Wigwe, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, his dear wife, son, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, alongside two others.

As the longtime CEO and Group Managing Director of Access Bank, Herbert was instrumental in transforming what was once a small commercial bank into one of the top five banks in the nation.

As we mourn his loss, we must view the passing of Herbert and these prominent individuals not just as a personal tragedy for their families but also as a significant loss for the business community and the nation at large.

May the Almighty grant solace to the Wigwe family, the Ogunbanjo family, the Access Bank Group, and all families affected by this tragedy.

Ikoyi Building Collapse: Anambra Election more important than any Nigerian life

Ikoyi Building Collapse: Anambra Election more important than any Nigerian life

Who still remembers in 2016 when around 33 Miners were trapped in a collapsed remote village mine of Chile?

The Country mobilised all forces and the President went all out in search of the most possible technology around the world to rescue them.

Even the Queen of England sent her special capsules engineers to assist.

Help came from every advanced world. I was glued to my television - and hoped the efforts worked. They were rescued - after several days.

Nearly a hundred persons are currently trapped in a collapsed 21 storey building in Lagos City of Nigeria. Not in any remote village.

Day by day, the figure of dead bodies excavated from the rubble keep increasing. As I type, the 36th dead Nigerian has been picked out.

The supposed President of Nigeria is nowhere near the boarders. The Governor is on the telly ranting.

The Federal Army and Forces are all in Anambra State prosecuting a Jihad, instead.

In UK, US and every other country you could think off, when calamities of this nature occurs, you will realise that being in the Army is not just for carrying guns.

If Rivers overflow in England, the Army is called in to assist. As Covid-19 ravaged, the Army built and equipped the largest Nightangle Hospital in Stafford. As the Country ran short of lorry drivers, the Army took to the wheels.

The only time you never saw the army is during a democratic exercise like Elections. No, not even in the most controversial Brexit elections.

Unfortunately, in the 21st century Nigeria, the Army conduct elections. And the Anambra Election, in particular, is far more important than any Nigerian life. You must know why, by now .

PRESS STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF ADEYINKA DANIEL, 200 LEVEL STUDENT OF FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AKURE

PRESS STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF ADEYINKA DANIEL, 200 LEVEL STUDENT OF FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AKURE

The Management of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA expresses deep sadness at the demise of one of its students, Adeyinka Daniel, 200 level, Software Engineering, in the early hours of August 3, 2021 following an automobile incident along Oyemekun Road Akure. We commiserate and identify with family , friends and fellow students of the deceased on this very painful loss of a promising student.
The university is particularly saddened by the circumstances leading to his death.

From available information the deceased student along with others were involved in an accident outside the campus around 10 PM on August 2, 2021. They were first taken to a private hospital where doctors battled to save their lives. Four of the students were stabilized but Daniel’s condition remained critical. When the condition of the student deteriorated the doctor at the Private Hospital referred him to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo for expert intervention.

At that time the parents of the student and some relations had joined him at the Private Hospital and it was decided, because of time factor, to bring him to the University Health Centre. The deceased student was brought to the University Health Centre at 3.20 AM and the doctor on duty promptly attended to the student in the car of the parents. According to him, all resuscitative efforts proved abortive; there was no cardiac activity and response to any stimuli. And by 3.40 AM he declared that he was brought in clinically dead. The doctor offered to take the boy to the morgue with the University Ambulance but the parents declined electing to take him home ostensibly for burial.

The Medical report from the Private Hospital which was brought along with him indicates that the student was clinically non responsive by 1.30 AM well before they got to the University Health Centre at 3.20 AM.

The death is unfortunate and regrettable.

The University has ordered an immediate review of the incident in order to ascertain the circumstances leading to it .
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased student. The University is also monitoring the state of treatment of the other students who were also involved in the unfortunate accident.

We pray that the Almighty God will grant the family and friends of the deceased the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Festival Turns to Horrific Tragedy, 45 Trampled to Death in Northern Israel

Chaos as Rescue Workers Struggle to Save Lives; Netanyahu Proclaims National Day of Mourning

Over 100 others injured in stampede in annual pilgrimage to revered rabbi’s grave

Authorities are investigating the cause, but it appears it was the result of a slippery staircase.

By Paul Shindman, World Israel News

At least 45 people died and over one hundred were injured, many of the critically, when people stampeded at the annual Lag B’Omer pilgrimage in northern Israel.

The largest mass event in Israel since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic suddenly turned into one of the country’s greatest disasters. An estimated 100,000-200,000 people were crowded at Mt. Meron in the northern Galilee area when some may have slipped backwards, starting a domino effect and causing people to flee in panic.

“Magen David Adom EMTs and paramedics are treating 103 injured of which 38 in critical condition in the field, 6 in critical condition who were evacuated to the hospitals, 18 in serious condition, 2 in moderate condition and 39 in mild condition,” said Nadav Matzner, a spokesman for the national emergency ambulance service.

The IDF said it brought in Israel Air Force helicopters and its air rescue unit to evacuate the wounded to hospitals around the country, with soldiers from the Homefront Command and medical teams from the north of the country responding to the scene.

“I was on duty when I saw dozens of people fall on top of one another during the collapse,” said Yehuda Gottleib, a volunteer EMT with the United Hatzalah rescue organization, who was one of the first responders at the scene. “A large number of them were crushed and lost consciousness.

“I immediately requested backup from the on-site dispatchers and told them to send as many additional volunteers and medical personnel as they could to the scene and that we had dozens of injuries,” Gottleib said.

“This is one of the worst tragedies that I have ever experienced. I have not seen anything like this since I entered into the field of emergency medicine back in 2000,” said United Hatzalah vice president Lazar Hyman.

A United Hatzalah official said dozens of medical teams performed CPR on the victims who were crushed, while others treated more than 100 people who were injured with varying degrees of severity.

Due to the nature of the incident, members of the Pychotrauma and Crisis Response Unit were dispatched as well in order to deal with those who are suffering from shock and emotional stress reactions, the rescue organization said

“A heavy disaster on Mount Meron. We all pray for the recovery of the injured,” tweeted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Many mark Lag B’Omer by visiting Bar Yochai’s gravesite as well as by kindling bonfires that symbolize the spiritual light brought into the world by the sage through his prominent Kabbalistic work known as the Zohar, eventually compiled in Spain some 1000 years later.

In Washington, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan sent the first American response.

“Our hearts go out to the people of Israel tonight following the terrible tragedy at Mount Meron. We offer our condolences to the families and friends who lost loved ones in this disaster, and wish a full and swift recovery to those injured,” Sullivan tweeted.

“The Ministry of Health and I have been following the terrible Meron disaster since nightfall,” tweeted Health Minister Yuli Edelstein. “Hospitals and rescue organizations are doing sacred work to care for the injured. Our hearts go out to the families of those killed in this difficult time

The crowds of mostly ultra-Orthodox Jews were making the annual pilgrimage to Israel’s Mount Meron to be near the gravesite of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yocha

According to tradition, Bar Yochai’s death occurred on Lag B’Omer, translated as “the 33rd day of the Omer,” which, according to the Hebrew calendar, is on the 18th day of Iyar. The Omer comprises a period of seven complete weeks starting from the second night of Passover and ending at the Jewish Festival of Weeks, known as Shavuot.

Sri Lanka indicts skipper of fire-stricken oil tanker

Sri Lanka indicts skipper of fire-stricken oil tanker

(AFP) Sri Lanka on Thursday indicted the Greek skipper of a fire-damaged supertanker for causing an oil spill and failing to report the environmental damage to the island's waters.

The Panamanian-registered New Diamond, travelling from Kuwait to India with 270,000 tonnes of crude oil, was passing by Sri Lanka's east coast when the fire broke out on September 3. Firefighters succeeded in putting out the blaze, and the crude remained unaffected but some of the tanker's fuel leaked.

Attorney-General Dappula de Livera filed charges against Steiros Ilas Kardany in the Colombo High Court under two counts that carry a maximum penalty of 20 million rupees ($108,000).

A date for a hearing is yet to be announced. The fire started after an engine room boiler exploded, killing one crew member. The remaining crew of 22, including the skipper, were rescued and are currently in Sri Lanka.

The stricken tanker was towed to Sharjah's Khorfakkan port in the United Arab Emirates after the owners paid Sri Lanka a claim of $2.38 million for dousing the fire.
