Waddle said: “They were in the Champions League final last season, top four last four years running and he has been a big part of it.
“They have looked at it and thought, where are Tottenham going at the moment? 10th is not going to pay the bills or attract the big players.
“Who will come in next? Jose Mourinho is nailed on, is he a Tottenham type manager? Will he sort it out? Will he be a fans' favourite with his style? I would say not, unless he changes his philosophy.
“Carlo Ancelotti would be a better fit, he has won as a player and a manager.
“Football moves very quickly, eventually it happens. He has been brilliant for the club but the way they have developed, they cannot stand still.”

Tottenham have sacked arguably their best ever manager, even if their 2-0 Champions League final loss to Liverpool in May was a gloomy glimpse of the slump to follow.This season's mediocrity on the pitch and murmurings off it snowballed this month, leading to Tuesday night's shock sacking at the end of the international break.
Pochettino himself had heightened the speculation and discontent with an uneasy mix of weary words, frustration and optimism after the last few matches.
Relegation form of 25 points in the last 24 games, combined with a Carabao Cup humbling by League Two Colchester and a 7-2 home loss to Bayern Munich, are stark stats.
And it is also thought the pressure on Poch became stronger after Jose Mourinho's team reportedly suggested the ex-Chelsea and Manchester United chief would welcome the Spurs job.
But Pochettino's main 'mare is Tottenham's shocking Premier League start, which further weakened his once rock-solid relationship with chairman Daniel Levy after what so far looks like a failed summer spree on Tanguy Ndombele and Ryan Sessegnon.

Jose Mourinho had been the odds-on favourite in the immediate aftermath of Mauricio Pochettino's sacking.
But a flurry of activity saw odds on Howe tumble and Mourinho's price lengthen. Howe had been an outsider at 12/1 and Mourinho had been heavy favourite at 1/4.
But by 9.30pm, Mourinho was back to 5/6 and Howe was suddenly second-favourite – ahead of the likes of Max Allegri and Rafa Benitez – at 11/4 with some bookies.
And fans were not impressed that the Cherries manager, who has no European experience and has never won a major trophy, was suddenly being considered for the job.
One fan wrote: “If we have just sacked Poch for Eddie Howe I'm done with the club.”
Husty Hotspur added: “Major step backwards and unforgivable. Would cost to get him on top of compo to Poch. This is Levy, it will be a freebie. That freebie better be Jose.”
AbdulTHFC added: “Look, as long as it's not Eddie Howe, I'm happy.”
