Earthquake reported in Tennessee near Decatur, first in 2020

A 2.5 magnitude earthquake in Tennessee has been recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

According to the USGS, the quake took place near Decatur and the Cumberland Plateau on Saturday morning. The earthquake had a depth of 15.9 km.

This is the first earthquake registered in the state of Tennessee in 2020. In November, 16 earthquakes were registered in the town of Ridgely in West Tennessee near the Mississippi River experienced 16 earthquakes, though the majority were aftershocks from an initial 2.1 magnitude earthquake.


An additional earthquake took place near Englewood in East Tennessee in December.
