Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council resolution renewing the mechanism for cross-border humanitarian aid shipments into war-torn Syria.
The draft resolution, filed in by Belgium, Kuwait and Germany, provided extending the mechanism for one year, with aid to be delivered through five crossings in Turkey, Jordan and Iraq.
Russia and China, however, sought to close the crossings in Jordan and Iraq, sending aid only through Turkey; their rival draft resolution on the matter renewed the mechanism only for six months.
When put to vote, the Belgium-Kuwait-Germany draft was vetoed by the two, with the rest of the 13 member states voting in favor of the resolution.
For Russia, a key backer of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad, this was the 14th veto cast at the Security Council since the Syrian conflict started in 2011.
Russia stepped in on the side of Damascus in September 2015 as the Syrian troops were facing hurdles in the fighting with the rebels and a sweeping offensive waged by the Islamic State group.
The Russian forces waged a heavy air strikes campaign, with Reuters reporting Friday that a heavy shelling and air raid campaign in northwest Syria uprooted some 50,000. According to 124News
