Stoltenberg In Kuwait, Says NATO facing most "complex security environment" ever

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday that his alliance was dealing with the most "complex security environment" in its history amid increasing tensions between member states, speaking in Kuwait City to mark 15 years of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI).

He said: "In all these years, NATO has never experienced a more complex security environment than it does today."


"To maintain our security, we need to be agile and prepared to respond to threats coming from all directions - from land, sea, air, space and cyberspace – also from state and non-state actors."


NATO'S 29 members vowed to work together on the fight against terrorism, arms control, relations with Russia and the rise of China during a two-day meeting near London that marked the alliance's 70th anniversary earlier in the month.


But leaders argued over personality and policy, with US President Donald Trump calling Canadian prime Minister Justin Trudeau "two-faced" and French President Emmanuel Macron saying the alliance was "brain dead."


The ICI was launched by NATO to augment security ties with the Middle East.
