Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has sacked all Fulani district heads, known as Ardos, replacing them with indigenous Nupe Chiefs in a historic move aimed at curbing kidnapping, violence, and terrorism. The decision effectively ends centuries of Fulani domination over indigenous people in the state, marking a significant shift in the region's political and traditional landscape.
The governor cited the rising cases of kidnapping, land grabbing, destruction of farmlands, and the invitation by local Fulani of other Fulani from outside the country to help them in sustained conflicts with indigenous people as reasons for the decision. He has replaced them with village chiefs or re-designated roles such as Hakimi to strengthen local indigenous authority and improve security in the state.
